January 2021 STEM Sacks

Register for STEM Sacks (please note availability)

Your options are:

  1. Growing Crystals (available the week of Jan 11th )
  2. Zines & Expression - Teens Only (available the week of Jan 18th)
  3. Zip Line Racers (available the week of Jan 25th)

Each STEM Sack comes with an invitation to “make” and a video with helpful hints. As maker activities are meant to encourage creativity we do not provide step-by-step directions. Additionally, younger students may need adult support to create a finished project.

Topics, description, and intended grade levels for each STEM Sack found below:

Growing Crystals: (most appropriate for K-8th grade)
Watch and observe how crystals grow at home! The STEM Sack will include materials to grow Borax Crystals and Salt Crystals. Explore how molecules interact. From glistening crystal snowflakes to crystalized replications of your favorite object, practice making your creation crystalize!

Zines & Expression: (most appropriate for 5th - 8th grade)
Get 3 activities in one with this kit focused on Self-expression. Make your own Zine- a small magazine made famous by small groups looking to publish their work independently. The history is fascinating, but the making is even more fun! We will include supplies and tips to get your first Zine ready for reading! Also included in this kit are two bonus activities- Spine Poetry and Blackout Poetry. Use your favorite books to create something completely new and all your own.

Zipline Racer: (most appropriate for K-8th grade)
Use simple materials to construct a propeller-powered racer to zoom across the room! Throughout this activity, students will have the opportunity to engage with concepts such as propulsion and potential energy. This kit is great for makers who enjoy customizing their creations and exploring outcomes of making minor changes. Create within minutes and enjoy for hours!
